My desktop comes up quickly and at that time there are a limited number of programs I can open but my processor is still running full blast and the hardrive is still running full blast for about 14 minutes. There are programs that will not open until the whole process is over. I realize that my computer is hardly stare of the art though. We seem to be stuck in a cycle that when hardware gets faster we come up with ever more bloated operating systems instead using that to make our OS run faster.

No it is a Toshiba A305D-S6864 laptop. I should say that by fully booted I mean when boot process fully releases the processor and harddrive from the boot process and I can start any program. After the desktop comes up open performance monitor and disk access and you can see how much of Vista is still booting in the background.

I wish I could have found a laptop with xp locally. My amd dual core tl-60 notebook with 3 gig of ram takes a full 14 minutes to fully boot Vista Ultimante 64 bit.
