I got an older model Compaq Presario from someone. Since WinXPs latest software glitch (WGA validation tool) I’ve had to reformat my hd numerous times in an attempt to get the computer working right. Now the computer shuts down without warning, refuses to read CDs (I’ve replaced the cd drive). Now it won’t run for very long on any OS (I’ve tried Win98, WinXP, several versions of Linux).
First some background information to help with your answer. We had a pretty bad lightning storm here a week ago. Lightning struck twice within 50 feet of our house. I’m worried it might have gotten the computer even though I use a surge protector. Also the computer is pretty old, at least 7 years.
Should I just replace the computer and cut my losses? Any ideas on what might be wrong with it? I’ve tried everything that I know to do.

I got a new netbook! Yes, I know it’s not an Apple but those are a little on the pricy side and I’m not really happy about the new laptops that Apple recently announced. This is going to be good for my parents to take on their upcoming travels to Ukraine with them. It’s very light, only three pounds!
