dell mini 9 – surfing the web and running apps.
i made this video because most of the mini 9 vids on youtube are only about hardware, some are about ubuntu, and NONE are about winXP.
i wanted to see a video like this when i was shopping/waiting for mine, so maybe some of you are in the same position
note: this mini 9 has been upgraded to 2 gigs of RAM through crucial.com
note 2: the usb plug sticking out of the side is just my mouse receiver

upgrading RAM for the mini 9 is the same process as for any other laptop (i.e. it is very easy)

hey what theme is that?. hopefully dell will give us a proper graphics card video driver soon that lets users with 2gb allocate some more to video.

first, you need to figure out what size HD you have, if you have the 4gb model, forget about it
second, you need to somehow get the dell mini 9 xp OEM disc (like all software, there is a legal way and an illegal way to do this). you can also just use a standard XP install, but then you have to fish for drivers.
third, get an external cd drive and do a standard reinstall on a partition (be warned, setting up partitions in ubuntu is a serious headache).

great video dude nobody has videos of mini running xp. 3 questions how do you create custom themes?? and also did you buy 1gb of 533MHz ram and was it easy to install?? thanks 5 stars

I noticed you said 2 gigs ram, from what i understand dell only offers 512 or 1 gig. Would you have confidence running all these programs with only 1?

i dont know anything about that remote admin stuff. but from just a muscle standpoint, the atom is about as strong as an early pentium 4. so you will probably be ok.
and keep in mind you can always run that stuff locally

heard of anyone running “go to my pc” or “logmein” from the mini? hoping to get the mini and remote in to my office machine to run apps, outlook, quickbooks and access files. total deal maker/breaker… thanks!

the theme is razor 2 final
be forewarned: setting up custom themes on XP:SP3 is a pain in the ass
December 6th, 2008 at 1:38 am
Thanks for the quick run-through. What are you using to theme/customize your task bar?
December 6th, 2008 at 1:38 am
i havent really “tested” the wifi
but my crappy verizon router is in my basement, and the mini 9 runs fine even in my loft (4th floor)
December 6th, 2008 at 1:38 am
Hey man
do you think the mini9′s has good wifi range? I think im going to get one for my brother, but I need to make sure that the wifi is good on it because our router is far away:p
thanks

this has a kinda small HD to set up a dual boot option
if i were going to do it, i’d buy the xp version and pull the ubuntu boot disk down from “elsewhere”
i know you can set up a dual option on the eee pc’s
but as my failed attempt to mount a SDHC card has a hard drive proves, the dell mini 9 is different
best of luck

Great video, thanks. Thinking of just buying the Mini with linox OS vice XP. I like XP, but really don’t see the need for it since I really only want it for communication, email, and writing documents. I do write documents while traveling/flying. In other words, can you turn the wi-fi on and off. How does the Mini’s wi-fi work compared to normal laptops?
Thanks

What I love about blogs is that they spark an idea in my brain. When that happens, I feel as I need to comment with the hope it might be interesting to some individuals. Simply because you will find plenty of blogs and forums with numerous points of view, they question your comprehension. It is at these moments when you have important insignt other individuals may not have experienced, together using the blogger him/herself. I find myself coming back again to to your writings only simply because you’ve several really good insights and also you have been at this a really long time, that is very inspiring and tells me you know your stuff. Maintain triggering imagination in other people!
