Would it be thinner than this?

The new ultra-thin laptop from Acer will come with a touch keyboard and use the back of the panel’s glass substrate as the cover.  According to sources from notebook players, Acer is expected to adopt Corning’s reinforced glass substrate and simply print color on its back to allow the substrate to function like a notebook cover for a frameless design.

The design will help reduce the thickness of the ultra-thin notebook and can also reduce material costs. Acer will also adopt a touch keyboard to allow the notebook to be even thinner, the sources noted.

Acer is expected to release the new ultra-thin laptop with the frameless design and touch keyboard in the second half of 2010.

Unfortunately Chou also stress that although HTC are studying and designing Tablets and Netbooks, they won’t be releasing it to the market soon. He was quoted saying;

“We will design, we will study, we will research, but that doesn’t mean we will do it.”

Chou stressed that if they are going to join the netbook foray, they will do it with a partner.

I think this is a great news for all of us as having HTC as one of the contender in the Netbook and Tablet market will surely put some competition on the active and big player. As HTC are well known for their innovation and creativity, they are sure to bring some improvement in the boring netbook market.

Each laptop in the Asus N-Series comes with USB 3.0, an Intel Core Processor as well as Bang and Olufsen (B&O) audio. Each of the N-Series notebook is capable of full HD on the video side as well as 3D playback. The Bang and Olufsen side of things increases audio quality making the laptop a full entertainment machine.

The standard amount of RAM on the N-Series is 4GB. The maximum amount of RAM supported on the Asus N-Series is not available. I assumed it should be from 8GB to 16GB maximum RAM supported by the N-Series. It is unknown exactly what processors are to be found in the N-Series laptops. Maybe it will be Core i5’s or Core i7’s depending on the N-Series model.

Screen size is also unknown at the moment although from the pictures we have seen they look to be fairly large (hence the entertainment side of things).

Pricing and availability is also unknown at this point. Hopefully Asus will unveil the full official specification soon.

Atom chips go into small, low-cost laptops called netbooks that are designed to surf the Web and run productivity applications. The N470 chip processor will run at a speed of 1.83GHz, making it Intel’s fastest chip for netbooks to date. The new processor is based on a new second-generation Atom chip architecture that Intel released in December.

Intel at the time announced the first chip belonging to the architecture, the Atom N450 processor, which runs at a speed of 1.66GHz. The processor can be found in netbooks priced between US$299 (RM1000) and $499 (RM1699). Systems based on N470 could start shipping as early as next week, the source said. Some PC makers displayed netbooks with the N470 processor at the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this year in Las Vegas, but no systems have officially shipped yet.

Intel officials declined to comment on the product. The architecture integrates a graphics processor and memory controller inside the Atom chip, which allows for faster system and graphics performance than its predecessor. Intel has claimed that the integrated graphics processor could smoothly play back 720p high-definition video.

The new Atom chips are also more power-efficient, which could extend the battery life in some netbooks. Some netbooks have shown battery life of more than 10 hours. The integration also makes the chip smaller, which allows PC makers to build smaller and lighter netbooks. Intel also offers the Atom D410 and D510 processors for low-cost desktops.

More improvements for Atom netbooks are on tap, including a graphics boost in early March when Nvidia launches the Ion 2 graphics platform. The platform couples an Atom processor with an Nvidia graphics processor to bring full high-definition video to netbooks. Acer has already announced a netbook, the Aspire One 532G, with the Ion 2 platform.

Acer Aspire One Dual Boot at MCW 2010

The Acer Aspire One Dual Boot is pre-installed with Microsoft Windows 7 and Google Android which enable its user the best of both Operating System. The new netbook can switch Operating System between Windows 7 and Android without rebooting. According to Acer, booting up the netbook to Google Android will take only 18 seconds and shutting down take no more than 3 seconds.

The Acer Aspire One dual netbook specifications was not unveiled by Acer’s official at the MCW 2010. Instead they focused on explaining the benefits of switching between two Operating System.

They were quoted saying;

The dual-boot netbook brings along a true revolution as it gives the best of two worlds. It offers the immediacy, the ultra fast connectivity and speed of Android for instant access to web browsing, emails and social interaction together [with] the full and reliable productivity of the Windows environment, simply by clicking to switch OS.

Even the pricing and availability are not mention. Whether other manufacturer will follow in Acer’s footstep in offering a dual boot netbook still remain unknown.

Acer Aspire One 532G The First Nvidia Ion 2 Netbook

While the previous Nvidia Ion graphics solution for netbooks provide an extra video power that surpass the solution from integrated Inte based Atom processor, the new Nvidia Ion 2 graphic solutions is an improvement over its predecessor. The Nvidia Ion 2 graphic solution for netbook can handle DirectX graphics and 1080p full HD.

The Acer Aspire One 535G makes use of Nvidia’s new Optimus switchable graphics technology, which means the Ion 2 graphics turn on to handle gaming and other graphics-heavy chores, while less demanding tasks are handled by the onboard graphics of the Atom N540 processor.

It had been proven that Nvidia Ion 2 pack 5 to 10 times more graphics power than the new Intel ‘Pine Trail’ Atom processor.

The Acer Aspire One 532G comes with the usual specs for a netbook: a 10.1-inch LED-backlit screen, built-in Wi-Fi, and option for 3G connectivity, and 10 hours of battery life. The 532G is offered in three color choices: red, blue, and silver.

No pricing has been detailed, but Acer says the Acer Aspire One 535G will be available sometime during the first quarter of 2010. Then Ion 2’s gaming prowess will be put to the test to see if you can do “real” gaming on it.

Lenovo Skylight Smartbook

Lenovo announced the details of their new Lenovo Skylight range of laptop and called them Skylight Smartbook. This raised an issue with the German Company, Smartbook AG. Smartbook AG has been selling laptops with the name Smartbook for quite sometime, and hold the trademark for the word “Smartbook”.

According to the courts, quoted;

Without approval by Smartbook AG, Lenovo must refrain from using the character sequence ‘Smartbook’ in all writing systems in association with mobile computers — such as laptops (notebooks) — as part of commercial correspondence in the Federal Republic of Germany

In case you are wondering what is the difference between a Netbook and a Smartbook, Smartbook is a device which lie somewhere between a Smartphone and a Netbook. Smartbook run on ARM processors and use a non-windows Operating System unlike Netbooks  which run on Intel Processor (x86) and Windows Operating System.

One point to ponder is that Smartbook AG, the German company which hold the trademark for the word “Smartbook” sell netbooks, not smartbooks.

What do you get for RM649.00? You will get total mobile computing freedom from Asus Eee PC 700 2G. The currently cheapest laptop in Malaysia run on an Intel Celeron Mobile 800MHz, 512MB of RAM, 2GB Solid State Disk Drive, and integrated display, sound, card reader and networking peripherals.

The Asus Eee PC 700 2G come with a 7″ monitor with a maximum resolution of 800×480 pixels. Although the cheapest netbook came pre-installed with Linux as its Operating System, many has succeeded in installing Microsoft Windows XP and Google Chrome OS, the latest craze in mobile Operating System nowadays. The battery life should last about 3 hours of heavy usage.

By just looking at the Asus Eee PC 700 2G specification you will definitely know that this netbook are only meant for surfing and not suitable for intensive resource usage application such as gaming. The point is, the Asus Eee PC 700 2G is cheap, small, light and you can take it everywhere, hence the name “total mobile computing freedom”.

I will expect several netbook manufacturer in Malaysia to follow Asus in releasing new netbook model in Malaysia with new price revision. With several new laptop emerging in the Ultra Portable Laptop segment, the device in the netbook segment will became smaller, lighter and cheaper.

Just by looking at the radical design of the Dell Adamo XPS you will know that this is no ordinary laptop. The Dell Adamo XPS latch open up with a finger swiped and the position is tilted a bit for enhanced cooling. Then you will marvel how they manage to fitted a full size keyboard to the Dell Adamo XPS in such a thin and slim dimension. And then you will wonder again where did they put the battery.

Enough praises. Let us get to the facts.

The original Dell Adamo is 0.65 inches thin. The Macbook Air is 0.76 inches thin. How thin is the new Dell Adamo XPS? It is 0.39 inches thin.
